DON’T BE GREEDY is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to Lake Havasu City residents who have to travel to get needed medical care through reimbursement for lodging, meals, and transportation.
The Reason We Exist…
Don’t Be Greedy was founded in honor of Shane “Greedy” Stitt, whose experience with Stage IV colon cancer showed firsthand how difficult—and expensive—it can be for Lake Havasu City residents to travel away from home for needed medical care.
After Shane’s diagnosis, much of his care required traveling to California. During one hospitalization, he spent more than 60 days away from home. Shane and Heidi were fortunate to have access to a place to stay nearby, allowing Heidi to remain close to him while he was in the hospital.
That experience made the additional burden of out-of-town medical care very real: travel, lodging, meals and the many everyday expenses that continue even while a family is focused on a serious illness.
Even while fighting for his own life, Shane continued to think about others. He asked Heidi to donate travel points from his credit card to a family facing a similar situation. That simple request reflected exactly who Shane was—someone who believed that if you had the ability to help, you should.
Shane passed away on August 6, 2023. In his honor, Heidi, along with family and friends, took his desire to help one family and turned it into something larger. Don’t Be Greedy was created to help Lake Havasu City residents who must travel for needed medical care by easing some of the added financial burden through reimbursement for lodging, meals and transportation.
The name Don’t Be Greedy carries Shane’s nickname, “Greedy,” forward—but the mission carries forward something even more important: his generosity and his belief in helping others when you have the opportunity to do so.
